Whats on to see and do:
The Brockenhurst Park Horse Trials are a fun day out with something for all the family. The main focus of the weekend is the British Eventing affiliated competition, which comprises of three elements - Dressage, elegant and refined; Show Jumping, precise and skilled; and lastly Cross Country, exciting and perilous. As a visitor you can watch all of these elements being performed by the 700 or so horses and riders that contend over the two days. The Cross Country in particular attracts huge crowds as the horses gallop round tackling up to 27 obstacles, almost all of which are maximum height for their particular level. The course is approximately 4000m in length and takes in most of Brockenhurst Park, the lake, the woods, up and down the hills, finishing in the magnificent horse-chestnut avenue which the horse Lovely Cottage, a Grand National Winner used to train on.

A first time guide to Horse Trials:
Horse Trials or as it is more popularly known - 'Eventing' - is the fastest growing of all equestrian sports. Great Britain has always been in the forefront of the sport and runs more events than any other in the country.

The origins of the sport go back to the days when the horse played an active role in military combat. The three phases of the sport, dressage, show-jumping and cross-country represent the necessary disciplines and attributes of a horse obedient and attentive to its rider, yet still possessing sufficient boldness and energy to go at speed across country, over hedges, ditches and other obstacles in pursuit of the enemy.

Today the rules of the sport are skilfully defined by the FEI and Horse Trials Group, an autonomous body operating under the umbrella of British Eventing (BE).

All event horses are graded by respect of the number of BE points they have received. Novice horses (less than 21 points), Intermediate (21-60 points) or Advanced (61 points and over). In simple terms horses gain points by being placed in the top six at events throughout the season. Most of these events will be One Day Events such as Brockenhurst Park where the three phases of dressage, cross country and show jumping all take place on the same day.
